Management models

Imagine that you are a manager. What would your ideal world look like? One where you can show off all your management chops. And since the world obviously is not ideal, how would you adjust your behavior accordingly?

I think most managers would ideally prefer their world to be like a turn-based game. One where the other side makes a move, and then nothing else happens while you observe the state of the world, use all your faculties, then make your “move”. Repeat ad infinitum.

The worst managers follow this mental model, possibly not even realizing that it has no reflection in reality. Mediocre managers realize that reality is different from this model, but try to act as if they can play out a coarse approximation. And great managers (or at least, those that strive to be great) completely reject it.
